Okay...these pictures will explain everything...my frustration at this whole art process and declare once and for all, IT'S NOT FAIR!!! Just click on them. I DARE YOU!!! You will finally see what I'm talking about! This is my daughter's artwork. She painted; she drew; she tore; she designed.
(Using a sarcastic tone to read this) Every day, I HAVE to live with this talent. And, I must say, though I'm proud, why didn't I get these genes? This was almost effortless for her. Since she was very little, she thought this way. She can draw; she can put colors together; she can put odd things together and it looks right. (She can do this with clothes too and look very fashionable.) I know what you're thinking...why don't I ask her to teach me? Well, you see, it's delicate; because this wonderful artist, first of all, is a teen with her own schedule and an attitude that she really doesn't know what she's doing...which is probably a copout for I don't WANT to teach you, nor do I have time, or that she really is that talented and just puts it together. YIKES!...Every once in awhile, she'll throw me a bone and give me a quick tip...she's even generous with her art supplies. However, if one doesn't know the first thing about holding a brush, it's pretty difficult painting with one. I'm good with big brushes and painting a house, but those little brushes? I club it to death. There is a ray of hope for me though. Can you say "YOUTUBE?" There a couple of wonderful artist who explain how to hold a brush at least, and they tell me what supplies are important to have out. It's the best thing to come along for people like me, besides community education. So, I guess you could say there is a small ray of hope. However, next time, I probably won't invite my other daughter or my husband to the community classes. These two both said they have NEVER drawn before, yeah right, like I believe that. My youngest daughter, math guru, who seemingly is book smart and not art smart, blew me out of the water also at our first drawing class. I'll have to dig up a picture and show you what I mean. She and my husband have both had a couple of Graphic Design classes so they know a bit about perspective and proportions...
Some more hope for me though is if I'm the worst in the class, all I can do is go up, right? ha-ha...
So, now, I want to ask the Big Guy, next time, can we have a reverse gene pool? Is there a way to pass those genes back up a generation? Or better yet...Maybe I'll have to keep up the good fight to keep art in school because I didn't get art in school, and look where I am now...a cripple!...don't know the first thing about Design Principles (working on it); don't have spatial relationships (probably math and that would be my fault or the possibility of not growing up with computers like my other daughter.)
Don't you feel for me? So, here is what you do for me: If ever, I mean ever, you hear of a new fangled operation where you can suck some of those talented genes from someone, duplicate them and put them into an art challenged person like me, will you let me know?
Thanks, I'd appreciate it a lot. Most importantly, when I do a project, even a small one, you'll know better where I'm coming from and what I have to work with and give me loud applause!
Have an artful day...signed, the cripple. :0)

Maybe you're being just a bit hard on yourself? You seem pretty artistic from here.

you are capable of so much more than you realize, marie!!
for what it's worth, i never learned how to properly hold a paintbrush, so just play with it and make your own way. i once took a drawing class where the teacher had us make our own drawing tools, so we dipped feathers in ink and drew with sticks. use your fingers if you'd like. play and have fun! :-)

Like Carol said, your girls are your works of art. And those genes had to come through you so you know they're in there! From what I can see you're very talented and creative! From one artist mom to another, be gentle with yourself.
:) Smiles!

Two of my favourite maxims for art - "be average" and "start anywhere"...sure helps to get over that perfectionist's procrastination!

I dare you to create something in secret! ^_^
You are a wonderful writer - that is art.

a reverse gene pool is such a quirky and really nice idea...I'd go for that...
but there is something to be said for recognizing "talent"...
the actual production of it can be done with practice and "developed" if you will.....I am currently looking at a Lee Hammond book that teaches how to make realistic looking portraits with pencil...it really gives hope...it always intimidated me..this idea, but when you see some steps broken down...the effort to learn, practice, improve over time...does not seem as intimidating to me...
there are so many different ways to express something beautiful with art...different styles, mediums...you have the artistic eye...I bet the rest of the body can get on board...keep open, I think: )
